During an appearance on Stephen Colbert’s Late Show, the host asked her about the set of photos, which, at the time, she’d posted proudly on her Instagram. Apparently, she’d responded to an impromptu invitation to the White House to meet the president (“President of what?” she remembers asking) along with a few other notables, and during the conversation about the economy and the recession Obama mentioned her film Up in the Air, which touches on those subjects.
Afterward, when the two had a minute to chat, the president said he hoped she hadn’t felt singled out by him mentioning her movie: “I hope I didn’t embarrass you earlier?” he’d asked. Kendrick, jokingly, replied, “Yeah, you’re such an asshole.” She then mentioned that she’d been the first person of the group to arrive—being from Maine, she’s very punctual. When Obama asked her if that was a thing, she replied, “You didn’t know that? You’re the president.”
“So, I called him an asshole and scolded him for not knowing enough about the 50 states, so that was what made him double over with laughter,” she said. Lucky for Kendrick, Obama took her scolding in stride, and, hey, she got the best Instagram post of all time out of it.
