Built in 1981, M/V American Century is a very large diesel-powered Lake freighter owned and operated by the American Steamship Company. It was built by Bay Shipbuilding Company, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. It includes self-unloading technology.

The ship, formerly called  the Columbia Star, is 1,000 feet (300 m) long and 105 feet (32 m) wide with a carrying capacity of 80,900 Gross Tons (at midsummer draft), either coal or iron ore.

The M/V American Century sailed its maiden voyage in ballast from Sturgeon Bay, WI in May of 1981 to load iron ore pellets at Silver Bay, MN for delivery in Lorain, OH.
