Twenty-nine years after they first won it, Desert Foxes of Algeria Friday won the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cairo Egypt, the host nation. They defeated Senegal 1-0. Senegal has never won the AFCON title.
Algeria won the match after they scored one of the strangest goals just in the 3rd minute the game started. Baghdad Bounedjah’s kick took a huge deflection off a Senegalese player and made its way into the net.
Algeria held on to the one goal till the end of the game while Senegal battled in vain to equalize.
Senegal played the game without suspended star defender Kalidou Koulibaly, but analysts say his presence probably wouldn’t have made much difference on the winning goal by Baghdad Bounedjah, who had a quality run and strike toward goal in the opening moments.
His shot hit off a defender’s leg, looked headed over or wide of the goal, but it dropped down like a brick into the goal for a stunning opener.
